Robert Mapplethorpe is my favorite photographer. This is something that surprises people that don't know me very well. He is a controversial figure, who fearlessly explored the raw sexuality of pre-AIDS era San Francisco. It was his pursuit of beauty that attracts me to his work. When I get lost in the details of flowers, I remember Robert's influence on my developing eye.

The Magic of the Paia Stupa

Paia is a cool surf town on the island of Maui. I am lucky enough to live here. The Maui Darma Center was founded in 1974 and continues to be a source of inspiration for people around the world. The Great Paia Lha Bab Stupa (pictured here) was built in 2005 and consecrated by the Dalai Lama on April 24th, 2007. I am not a Buddhist, but I believe in the power of prayer and meditation. I have been known to take a few spins around the stupa.

Pele: She-Who-Shapes-The-Sacred-Land
I always imagine Pele, our beloved Hawaiian Fire Goddess, to share some of the same archetype as the Indian goddess Kali. Pele both destroys and creates, laying waste to the trees, houses and people in her way. And after this molten river of destruction meets the ocean, new land is created.

Pele deserves to be honored & respected. In these images of I hope to do her justice. May she be pleased

Every other Sunday, my friend Roger McKinley plays the bagpipes at Mulligan's on the Blue. Often, he is joined by Bud Clark (bodhran), Cary Ritt (snare), and David MacDonald Asher (pipes). Mulligan's is in Wailea and has a stunning view of the ocean and the sunset. Great place to have a proper pint and enjoy great music! Here a few images from a recent night at the pub.

Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas

There is a pretty cool Celtic music scene on Maui and recently, I was asked to photograph the Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas concert at the MACC. My friends Hamish and Jennifer of Maui Celtic put on the concert. Other friends played music as the pre-show entertainment: Kevin O'Kennedy, of the Celtic Tigers on whistles and vocals, Bud Clark on bodhran, Peter Della Croce on snare, bodhran and guitar, and Roger McKinley on smallpipes.

Michael Riedel opened the show with a few tunes on the highland pipes and Wilmont Kamaunu Kahaialii blessed us with the blowing of a conch shell and Hawaiian Oli. He later paid tribute to Hawaiian Crown Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleghorn, who was both Native Hawaiian and Scottish. Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas are amazing and if you ever get a chance to see them live, it is not to be missed!

Dharma Center

rI am lucky to live in a cool town. It's big enough to have the necessities, a health food store, a few places to get coffee, a few places to have a pint, a post office and a few of my closest friends. Paia is also blessed with The Maui Dharma Center and our very own stupa, that was consecrated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama nearly 2 years ago, April 24, 2007. This is a detail from the top of the structure.
